About the Partnership
The easier and more aligned measurement systems are, the more streamlined the supply chain data is for companies focusing on major sustainability issues in the textile industry. Aligning on efforts around metrics harmonization, The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) and the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) are working towards data platform interoperability and collaborating on future textile innovation projects.
For over 3 years, TSC and the SAC have collaborated to support the creation of more sustainable products in the apparel, footwear, and home textiles industry. SAC is comprised of brands, retailers, manufacturers, government, and non-governmental organizations and academic experts, representing more than a third of the global apparel and footwear market. This collaboration brings key partners, and their members, together to create harmonization in sustainability measurement for the textile industry.
One of the key elements of this partnership is that TSC is a member of SAC and SAC is a member of TSC. Being active participants in each organization’s respective work streams allows for transparency into the development of membership tools and processes and helps identify collaboration and innovation opportunities.
Aligning Metrics
Recently, TSC and SAC staff collaborated to conduct an alignment assessment, focusing on environmental indicators at the facility level. This alignment assessment helped determine the direction that TSC KPIs would take, making sure that the KPIs asked on retailer surveys aligned with data requested from textile suppliers in other surveys. Because of the collaboration and assessment, TSC KPIs and SAC’s Higg Index 3.0 were revised to further align methodology and measurement methods and drive the use of both of these metrics systems in a complementary fashion. Companies that use the Higg Index can currently use that data to answer TSC KPIs. Both companies are continuing to streamline this reporting process.
These changes focus on providing guidance on how to use the data collected to respond to the respective metric systems. Both organization’s efforts are making surveys easier and more consistent for textile suppliers as well as providing more data overall to increase transparency and sustainability in the industry.
