In addition to being a TSC hotspot, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO) almost 21 million people are victims of forced labor – 11.4 million women and girls and 9.5 million men and boys. Social sustainability standards have not been able to reduce those numbers for various reasons, but companies may be able to take on the risk of forced labor by identifying chain of management proxies (e.g. grievance processes, codes of conduct) that can work to reduce the risk of forced labor making its home in your supply chain.  Join this discussion as we explore how to best collaborate to squeeze out forced labor from the dark corners of the supply chain.

The food, beverage, and agricultural industry recognizes that food companies need help communicating to consumers about pesticide use in the production of the products they make and sell. They also recognize that pesticide application is heavily regulated in both conventional and organic production methods. The current situation is very binary in its approach in that either companies want to avoid pesticide use all together or set specific pound restrictions for growers, which doesn’t work well across diverse regions and commodities.

This project aims at exploring how Integrated Pest Management (IPM) can help growers better understand what food companies need and help food companies better communicate to consumers the practices that are used through the implementation of IPM on farm. It is also intended to better communicate what proper and respectable IPM includes. Come learn about the vision, goals, and mission of this project and help guide it’s progress and development.

Billions of pounds of postconsumer film (plastics bags and packaging) are produced in North America each year. Film based packaging has many benefits including: efficiency in transportation, safety, accessibility, extending shelf-life, minimizing material usage, and preserving the quality of consumer products packaged goods. Yet only a portion of the film is recovered annually for recycling. Recovery and recycling is limited by 1) Access to Collection, 2) Consumer Participation (consumer education – what and where to recycle) 3) Reclamation Capacity/Sorting Technologies, and 4) Strong end-markets. We all know that it takes all actors in the chain to tackle the gap in the (on average) low income countries between current wage levels and living wage/income levels. It is a joint challenge and responsibility which requires joint action. Retail plays an important role, but also at this level one retailer alone undertaking the action is not enough for the simple fact that nobody is big enough to take this on their own. Therefore a joint approach or a sector approach that can be peer-reviewed is needed.

21st century farming demands sustainable practices to thrive agribusiness. As we push yields higher and more efficiently farm our land, risk due to weather is an ever present factor in successful farming. In this presentation, we will examine how weather risk has evolved in farming over the last 70 years and how these changes have manifested in yield trends. We will discuss global change and its impact on farming and reveal through sound scientific analysis what these changes mean in the coming decades. Finally, we will look at trends in high impact, low frequency events like hail, flash floods, flash drought, and severe winds and how the timing and severity of these events impacts farming operations. Our goal is understand the factors that drive weather risk in agriculture and how to sustainably approach weather risk management.

With 2020 right around the corner, is your company on track to meet its zero deforestation commitments? If you are struggling to identify your sourcing regions and risks, TSC’s new global deforestation model can help. TSC collaborated with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and University of Maryland to create a model that helps companies identify and prioritize areas that are experiencing commodity-driven deforestation and slash and burn agriculture practice. Hear how the Sustainable Forestry Initiative is considering this work as part of their effort to illustrate conservation values in well-managed forests. Also, hear how the model is being used to help identify priority regions in Conservation International’s Sustainable Coffee Challenge. In addition, hear from Greenpoint Innovations on how achievement of zero deforestation commitments can be supported by enhanced land use planning, mapping, and risk management mapping through the use of latest drone technology. It is estimated that a large percentage of water pollution is linked to textile production. While technology solutions exist, they are often not being used and wastewater is directly discharged to receiving waters, untreated. Sometimes even when the water treatment technology is purchased and used, it is not run continuously in order to save money. To address the challenge, there is a need to create awareness amongst decision-makers and operators of textiles mills about the business risks and opportunities of proper wastewater treatment. Textile plants throughout the supply chain should have access to the information, resources, and training that they need to properly treat wastewater discharge from their facilities. Come join this working session where project champions Fruit of the Loom, HanesBrands, North Carolina State, Walmart, Wrangler, and ZDHC we will lead us through a discussion to fine tune the project details in order to prepare for launching this important and impactful innovation project.
