School of System Change Preview
The challenges we face as sustainability professionals are complex and interconnected. They’re global in scale, with many root causes and contributing factors, supported by deep-rooted institutions and structures. It can seem that the more urgency we feel, the more these challenges seem nearly unmovable.
How do we know where and when to intervene? What actions and efforts will unlock transformational change, and avoid unintended consequences? How do we work with power, and understand who and how to influence to make change happen?
Forum for the Future and our partners in the School of System Change believe that growing a global community of change agents is our best chance to transition to a sustainable future. We are building the system change capabilities of change leaders around the world, and invite you to join us for a whirlwind tour of just some of the tools, approaches, and methodologies that can support you to take a systemic approach to your work. Come and learn from the do-ers and the makers, take real life lessons back with you, and discover how you can be a system change agent, whatever your context and role.

TSC Idea Forum at the Summit – Defining the Next 10 – My Role as A Sustainability Leader
12:30 to 1:00 – Arrive and refreshments, 1:00 start.
During this 10-Year Anniversary edition of TSC Idea Forum at the Summit, we will leverage TSC’s collective action approach to emphasize the importance of personal reflection, self-discovery, and peer-to-peer learning when trying to unlock those aha moments that drive change. We hope to dig deeper into the sustainability challenges we face and evaluate both “where have we been, and where are we going?” as we work towards tackling those challenges.
We recognize that often as sustainability leaders, we are the lone voice in driving change. With this in mind, TSC Idea Forum at the Summit will provide an opportunity to 1) engage with other sustainability leaders across diverse sectors, 2) better understand the adaptive nature of the complex sustainability hotspots we are trying to address, and 3) explore how we can best prepare ourselves as leaders to affect change. We hope to create an environment conducive to both self-reflection and collaboration while we work to define our own role as leaders in sustainability. Come join us!
Program:

Value Propositions, Challenges, and Opportunities with Farm-Level Sustainability Metrics
Farm-level sustainability metrics data are a key ingredient for CPG companies and other buyers seeking to address sustainability reporting and measure progress toward achieving sustainable sourcing goals. The challenge is how to make both the metrics, and the experience of implementing them, as valuable as possible for growers given the extra effort required to manage data and report out, while ensuring that buyer needs in the value chain are also addressed. This session will provide an overview of how farm-level sustainability metrics are being implemented by growers in diverse ag production systems, ranging from almond orchards to corn and soy fields. Citing crop-specific examples, panelists will share perspectives on how to enhance the value propositions of sustainability metrics through data driven feedback processes, grower engagement, and regulatory reporting tools.

The global demand for animal protein is increasing, and research supports feed as one of the most important sustainability issues in animal protein value chains. Yet, four years of TSC data on feed suggests an ongoing challenge to measure and report feed-related impacts. During this special 2-hour session, we will learn about the state of data across the value chain, hear how various tools are measuring and managing feed impacts, and explore ideas for closing measurement and reporting gaps.

Say What? Are Some Product Claims Too Good to be True?
Advertising claims are a key driver for consumer decision-making and brands are keen on competitively highlighting the best attributes for the products they sell, but it’s often difficult to tell fact from fiction for some environmental and safety claims on shelf. From “Free-Of” to “Ozone-Friendly” to the myriad of certifications and seals of approval that are placed on products daily, hear from brand manufacturers on the current state of the claims market and the process and challenges faced in accurate communication of product claims to consumers.

Building the Textiles Wastewater Treatment Toolbox
From cars, to clothes, to medical supplies: most aspects of modern life rely on the textile manufacturing sector. This vital supply chain is experiencing growing risks since textile mills require substantial amounts of water to dye and treat fabric; a single mill can use up to 200 tons of freshwater per ton of dyed fabric. The Sustainability Consortium has launched a project to create the Textiles Wastewater Treatment Toolbox, an online toolbox where manufacturers can access resources related to these challenges. Join the conversation to help both manufacturers and brands improve their wastewater footprint, and have a positive, value adding message to bring to their consumers.

Pesty Business: Understanding and Communicating Responsible Pest Management in Your Supply Chain
Understanding pest management in your supply chain is never an easy task, let alone explaining it to customers. What if you had a clear and concise way of communicating with your supply chain about the pest management approaches used in the production of the products you make and sell? What if you, as a grower, had a way to share the innovative ways that you are investing in responsible pest management practices using Integrated Pest Management principles? This session will provide a chance to learn about the latest efforts to build awareness and improve communication on this issue, learn about the Responsible Pest Management Task Force, and get involved in the project that the group is working on.
